Study Shows How Dietary Supplement May Block Cancer Cells

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Researchers at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC-James) have discovered how a substance that is produced when eating broccoli and Brussels sprouts can block the proliferation of cancer cells.

Compelling evidence indicates that the substance, indole-3-carbinol (I3C), may have anticancer effects and other health benefits, the researchers say. These findings show how I3C affects cancer cells and normal cells.

The study focused on breast cancer cells. It is likely that it can fight other cancers too, and it may even reverse Alzheimer's disease.

The laboratory and animal study discovered a connection between I3C and a molecule called Cdc25A, which is essential for cell division and proliferation. The research showed that I3C causes the destruction of that molecule and thereby blocks the growth of breast cancer cells.

"Cdc25A is present at abnormally high levels in about half of breast cancer cases, and it is associated with a poor prognosis," said study leader Xianghong Zou, assistant professor of pathology at the Ohio State University Medical Center.

The Chemical "I3C can have striking effects on cancer cells," he explained, "and a better understanding of this mechanism may lead to the use of this dietary supplement as an effective and safe strategy for treating a variety of cancers and other human diseases associated with the over-expression of Cdc25A." Zou cited- Cancers of the breast, prostate, liver, esophagus, endometrium and colon, and in non-Hodgkin lymphoma; other diseases such as Alzheimer's disease also has abnormally high levels of the Cdc25A molecule.

Ultimately, the researchers tested the effectiveness of I3C in breast tumors in a mouse model and found that when it was given orally to the mice it reduced tumor size by up to 65 percent. They also showed that I3C had no affect on breast-cell tumors in which the Cdc25A molecule had a mutation in that key location.

The scientists used dietary supplements that contained the active ingredients of broccoli and Brussels sprouts, although it is likely that the same effect can be achieved by eating the vegetables themselves. Cruciferous vegetables such as Broccoli, Bok Choy and Brussels sprouts, has strong anti-cancer properties, particularly when it comes to prostate and colon cancers. Even more promising results have been found with broccoli sprouts, which have more than 50 times the amount of sulforaphane than found in mature broccoli.

In another study on breast cancer cells, researchers at the University of Michigan found that a substance found in broccoli and broccoli sprouts killed cancer stem cells and prevented new tumors from growing in mice and human cell cultures in the lab.

Why women need it: Cruciferous veggies like broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts pack a serious punch against cancer.

That’s one reason why Joel Fuhrman, M.D., author of Eat for Health and Eat to Live, recommends eating foods from that family every day.

In lab studies, Sulforaphane, a chemical found in broccoli and its cousins, actually made cancer cells like leukemia and melanoma self-destruct. A 2007 Chinese study found that the compound may slow down the spread of breast cancer. Sulforaphane is a compound that prevents cancer by "assisting the body to create an enzyme that prevents tumors from forming. The test showed sulforaphane from broccoli sprouts reduced cancer by 60-80 percent (Life Extension Dec. 1997). Further studies showed that "sulforaphane aided in shrinking tumors already present" (Dr. David G. Williams.-Alternatives Jan. 1998) Perhaps the most amazing fact about sulforaphane from sprouted broccoli is that it does not concentrate on certain organs or particular cancers. Because it fights cancers on a cellular level it helps all organs against all forms of cancer. Sulforaphane is found in large quantities in broccoli and increased levels of 30-50 times the potency are found in broccoli sprouts, thus making broccoli sprouts among the most potent anticarcinogens in the food area.

One cup of broccoli also boasts a whopping 135% of your daily vitamin C needs.
